How much money do you think Holden has spent throughout chapters 1-18?
ReplyDeleteHow much money did he start off with?
question for chapters 14 to 18
ReplyDeletewhy did Holden change his mind about going into the museum after he had walked from the park?
I tried to vote for the question, but it didn't work. I wanted to vote cynical.
ReplyDeleteI want to know why Holden keeps on hanging out or talking to people he believes are very phony, why doesn't he talk to someone he enjoys talking to for once?
ReplyDeleteI think he probably keeps hanging out with people he thinks are phony because he's lonely and is just desperate for some type of socializing.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Holden have the guts to call the people he rarely talks to or the people he doesn't like to hang out but not the people he likes?
ReplyDeleteI think he finds it easier to call people he dislikes rather than the people he does like because he is lonely and does want to talk or be with someone, but he doesnt want to talk or be with someone that he likes because he finds it much harder to face these people. He may be ashamed of his recent actions that led to his getting kicked out of school and fears what judgement people close to him may give.
ReplyDeleteThrough chapters 14-18 I started to develop a dislike for Holden. I understand he is lonely but it almost seems as if he is doing it to himself. He sounds like a great guy and all but he rants on and on about what everyone around him is doing wrong. He sounds very judgmental. It just seems that since he is depressed he can't see any good in the people around him. He develops disgust towards any guy that is friends with one of his "girl friends". Maybe he is protective of them, or is he just jealous? I don’t really know. I guess the reason why I kind of start to dislike Holden is because he seems to find something about everyone that he does not like and if I were to meet him it seems like he would have something bad to say about me too. Does anyone else somewhat agree with me?
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you JonVan, I mean nobody is perfect... but it's not like we all go around ranting about every little problem there is with everyone around us. If i ever met him I'd probably feel insecure of what he was actually thinking of me, and would probably want to get out of there as fast as I could before he would explode on me for something that's "wrong with me".
ReplyDeleteI agree with what everyone is saying about Holden. If he was a real person, and went to a school, I could see him being one of those people who just sit there in the concer, never talking to anyone, always being to himself, and just having a negative attitude to anyone or anything around him.
ReplyDeleteI also agree but on the contrary, Holden doesn't really tell these people what he actually thinks of them. So in reality if he was a real person that we went to school with, we would hang around with him not knowing all the things he is thinking that are "wrong with us". I've also started to dislike Holden in the last few chapters.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why Holden decided to give the nuns a donation when he clearly states in chapter 15 that he is annoyed and put off by religion?
ReplyDeleteso to answer marcs question i think he calls people that he rarely hangs out with because they don't really know he's not in school and shouldn't be at home yet, and if he talked to people that were close to him they'd know he got kicked out of school and tell his family or something. But i dont' understand why the people he hadn't talked to in awhile are the ones that are hanging out with him, and talking to him on the phone. I'm really interested to see if he actually gets around to talking to jane and what he'd say and what they'd do. maybe play checkers.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Jasmine's question I think that Holden gives the nuns a donation because he is feeling guilty that he has enough money that he can afford anything he wants while they do not.
ReplyDeleteTo add to Jakes response, I also think he did it because he felt guilty of everything he'd done in his past, and also maybe if he helped them God would see and keep Allie safe up there?
ReplyDeleteBesides that fact of Holden not feeling sexy, why do you think he didn't have sex with the prostitute? He said he wanted to practice but then when it came down to it, he chickened out.

ReplyDeleteSarah, I think he bailed out because he's something of a "phony" himself. He thinks one thing at one moment, but when it comes down to it, he realizes how big of a deal it really is & doesn't have the guts to go down with anything in the end. He's constantly under-analyzing things, & is the epitome of "easier said than done." I also think it's because in all actuality, from the beginning, he didn't really want to have sex with her to begin with. He just needed someone to talk to. He just thought, if he had really wanted to, practising with her could be an option.
ReplyDeleteThanks for answering back Charity. I agree with you, he really doesn't have any guts. I think Holden's just all talk.
ReplyDeleteWhat does the word "bourgeois" mean?
