POINT OF VIEW & LANGUAGE USE - SECTION 3

What is the effect on the reader of the way Holden tells his story?

  1. The way Holden tells the story really helps us to learn his personality. He seems to go off topic really easy, but it's always things that have some sort of meaning to him. For example, in chapter 10 when he goes on for at least a page about his younger sister Phoebe and how he wishes he could give her a call. The language usage in the novel really helps us understand how poorly he does in school, since he spells words that may not be wrong, just strange, for example: Good by instead of Good bye.

  2. I agree that he has a very poor variety in vocabulary, it really does demonstrate his lack of learning in school. Other examples I find are that he's constantly saying, "if you want to know the truth." &, when he's finishing confessing something to the reader he always ends it with, "I did, I really did." or "I would, I really would." etc. Yet he sort of makes fun of a person from his passed for having parents who say "she don't" & "he don't", showing he can be somewhat hypocritical at points.

  3. At the beginning of the novel, the way Holden narrated annoyed me a lot. Now that i'm further into the story, and got used to the way he talks, I don't mind so much. I think it adds a lot to the story, because it's different and reflects the kind of person he is. I find it funny how he's so blunt and says such random things. I'm not used to reading stories being told in this style, and I think that's why it took me a while to get used to the way he talks.

  4. I have to agree. I really enjoy reading from Holden's perspective because of his randomness and his habits of going off topic. Some of his explanations I find are very humourous, some are just ridiculous! For example, Holden always seem to reassure his explanations with, "He really did," "I really do," or "She really didn't." I find this becomes annoying after a while.

  5. It is kind of interesting the way Holden talks, but I agree that after a while it does get annoying. I'm sick of hearing "goddamn" after everything. But it is interesting. He is very blunt and you get to learn a lot about him and the ways he thinks quickly.

  6. This book is written in a first person. I think that its a good way to write this book but I aslo think it would be good if it was written in third person. my reason being that if it was written in third person we would be able to veiw not only Holdens side of the story but also everyone else's.
I realize Holden does swear alot and it actually doesnt bother me all that much. its who he is. and we cant really change that so its something you kinda gotta get used to.
I also realize that Holden repeats himself a lot which this does kinda get annoying due to the fact im reading the same thing over and over again.
