EXTENSION - SESSION 2
In what ways can you relate to Holden and/or to the story he's telling. Have you known characters like Ackley or Stradleater? Have you ever told elaborate lies just for the fun of it? Try to make connections with your own life, with the world, or with other literature you have read.
HOLDEN CAULFIED - SECTION 2
This is where you can talk about Holden. He's quite the character; try to think about his motives, his conflicts, his dreams, his desires, his confusions.
SETTING - SECTION 2
Holden visits many different places on his journey home from Pencey Prep. Look closely at them. Don't be afraid to "google" some of the places to learn more about them.
POINT OF VIEW & LANGUAGE USE - SECTION 2
Discuss the reliability of Holden as a narrator. As well, comment here on the narrative voice and the style of writing J.S. Salinger uses. Don't be afraid to use quotations to back up your ideas.
CHARACTERS - SECTION 2
This is where you talk about and analyze characters OTHER THAN HOLDEN. What you can include are Holden's feelings about, observations of and reflections on the many characters he meets throughout the novel.
THEMES - SECTION 2
What "big ideas" do you think Salinger is trying to get his readers to think about? How are these ideas developed as the novel moves forward?
Q & A - SECTION 2
If you don't know or you're wondering, post your question here. Check in regularly to see if you can help someone else with their question.
