I'm not sure why, but this section of the blog got shoved off the main page today and into older blogs. Kurt had posted three questions and some of you had answered the first two. Here is his third question:
ReplyDeleteWhy does Holdon always wonders where the all the ducks go when the whater freezes over? Did he go there with his brother before his brother died?
Please continue this thread from here.
I think that maybe Allie had asked Holden where the ducks went when the pond froze over and he didn't know the answer, so when his brother died I think it's a goal of his to tell Allie where they go since he sometimes talks to him when he has nobody else to talk to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Corrinn. I think alot of things in the book tie into Holden's relationship with his brother Allie. It seems like maybe he had a close connection with his younger brother.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though Holden is always asking a lot of questions. Perhaps he asks the questions because, with Allie's death, no one is around to be asking him any.
ReplyDeleteI think Holden asks this question quite frequently because he may think of himself as a duck during winter. He feels he does not belong in his present setting, and like a duck he would like to fly away. Therefore he asks this question because he feels like maybe if he knew the answer to this question he would have some indication as to where he could take his life to somewhere where he feels he can belong and where he can finally have peace and be comfortable.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it mean when Holden goes on and on about being "yellow"?
ReplyDelete"Yellow" refers to his cowardice or him being a coward.
ReplyDeleteIs Holden sauve with the ladies..?
ReplyDeleteI think Holden thinks he's sauve with the ladies but from what we know of him and his personality I find it hard to believe that he would be very suave. He doesn't have very much tolerance for things that irritate him and he finds something that irritates him in almost every person.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Holden get so riled up over Ernie the piano player?
ReplyDeleteI think Holden get so riled up over Ernie because people worship Ernie while Holden sees nothing more than an arrogant man on stage who's showing off and pretending to be something he's not. Holden can't understand why people go crazy over a person with qualities that Holden sees as bad.
ReplyDeleteHolden is no where close to being suave with the ladies. Also, I am going to add that he isn’t very confident around women. Honestly look at the evidence, he didn’t even go and talk to Jane Gallagher at Pency and the only reason he called up that whore along with talking to those girls at the bar was because he was hornier then a rabbit. Besides, those three women merely danced and talked to Holden because they were plastered out of their faces. What a suave guy, scrapping up drunk women from off the floor.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Zack. I think Holden is somewhat sauve with the ladies. He often speaks about his experiences with women and he does not talk about bad experiences. The reason why he danced with those older ladies was because he was lonely and he wanted to have some fun. The three woman ignored him because of there age difference. Throughout these chapters Holden speaks about his different relationships and he seems to show woman alot of respect.
ReplyDeleteI heard that because of this book a president was shot or something along those lines. Did anyone else hear that? So, the reason for the red hunting hat had something to do with hunting people. I know that sounds crazy but a friend from River East said something about that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jon, I feel Holden, for his age, is confident when he is with the women at the bar. He obviously was very upset and depressed, and this depression is most likely caused by his loneliness. As the story progresses, he is beginnning to talk about women more frequently and this because he is lackng a love life, or atleast a sex life.
ReplyDeleteKayla, I researched what you said about someone being shot because of this book and it could possibly be true or at least there's a theory about it on the internet. John Hinckley was obsessed with this book and he attempted to assassinate President Reagan. This is only one theory. There's a lot of different theories about this book causing death. The Catcher in the Rye also motivated Mark Chapman to shoot John Lennon. Mark Chapman was psychotic when he shot John Lennon. Chapman started hearing voices in his head and his doctor diagnosed him with Psychosis. Before he assassinated John Lennon, Chapman was in Hawai sitting in his room and he kept saying over and over, "the phony must die says the catcher in the rye, the phony must die says the catcher in the rye, John Lennon must die says the catcher in the rye." John Lennon was considered to be a phony.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Corrinn, about Holden wanting to find out about the whereabouts of the ducks in the winter time. This probably was a question that his brother Allie had ask of him, and he was never able to give the answer. His goal is to find that answer.
