  3. Those are great questions, Kurt. I hope somebody can answer them. I think maybe Holden doesn't know what he wants out of life, so school seems pointless to him. Does anybody agree or disagree with me?

  4. oh i definitely agree with you, because how could you work forward to being something and doing something for your life, if you don't know what your final goal is. So i could see how Holden would see school as pointless, and not important.

  5. I think Holden doesn't fix his grades because he didn't really care at that moment about school and how it will impact his future. But as we read more, we can see that Holden starts regretting his failure and how he never tried in school.

  6. I think that Holden is also partly discouraged to continue with school because he views everyone there as a "phony", & doesn't want to be like -or even around- them.

  7. Holden is trying to find himself, because he feels lost with his identity, after wearing a red hat to make himself more like his siblings, and trying to sleep with a prostitute so he can finally be with a woman, hes going through a change in life. Schools his last priority he just wants to be content with his life.

  8. Mr. Beebe I can somewhat agree with you. I think that Holden is not motivated at school because the environment that his school created was an environment he could not live in. Everyone was expected to act a certain way, a way that Holden found "Phony". Holden went to a school that was highly associated with academics. Everyone around him was probably very smart, including Holden. But Holden was not willing to participate in a school where academics determined your personal value. It does mention in the novel that Holden was very good at English. I think that this is because it was the one thing that he could relate to. He is always thinking and always having opinions about something. I also think that he does not participate in school because many of the adults that he has met in his life seem "phony" to him. Why would he want to go to school, get a job, in order to grow up to be the very adults that were "phony" to him?
