I think Holden is lonely and just wants someone to listen to him. When he is with Sally he ends up asking her to run away with him. I think its because he is lonely and even though Sally may not be the best company, she is there with him and he likes the idea of always having her there. Although when she thinks thats a crazy idea he starts to hate her which is a sign that maybe he isnt ready to commit to someone no matter how lonely he is.
ReplyDeletein theses chapters holden keeps jumping around from topic to topic and cant stay on one topic for more then a sec he exsplains in full detail about the topic and then he'll just jump right to another topic.
ReplyDeleteI think that Holden is just very confused, he never really knows what he wants. But he is also very lonely because instead of calling the people he really wants to see or hang out with he calls the people who he could care less about and that really annoy him. I also think that Holden is very jealous of everyone because he always talks about them in a ranting type way even know he says he dislikes them and he also gives us information about them we don't really need to read like how Sally had all these boys trying to date her and such.
ReplyDeleteIn chapters 14-18 Holden begins to annoy me a bit. His ranting and negative attitude starts to become worse and he becomes less of a funny guy and more of a nuisance. He blatntly scrutinizes everything and nothing around him is good enough. In chapter 17, Holden shows his distain of growing up. He asks Sally if she would like to move away with him and get married very spontaniously, when she responds in a manner most people would, by declining his offer and telling him it is a ridiculous thing to do since right now they are both still young but maybe when they are older, Holden gets upset. He starts ranting about how it would be different if they didn't do it right then. He names different "grown-up" things they would have to do before that and it just wouldn't work out. I think Holden just needs to get a grip on his life and to try and stop dwelling on the death of Allie. We see that when Holden is feeling down and out the first thing that pops into his mind is Allie and then it makes him feel even worse.
ReplyDeletei think holden has a lot on his mind and is thinking about a whole lot of things and that is why he keeps boucing around from topic to topic.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Holden really has some issues. The story seems like a track where Holden's thoughts are just racing around in circles. His habit is to begin a new topic, call it phony, and move on to the next supposed phony topic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Daniel said about Holden picking a topic, calling it phony, and then moving on to the next subject. Holden just seems to be running around trying to find some kind of thing to hold on to and keep him from going to Colorado.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cam. Holden runs around town trying to find where he belongs. Holden doesn't seem to have many goals in the story. I just think that he is trying to find a place to fit in. A place where he's not around anyone to call phonies.
ReplyDeleteHolden is trying to understand what is goes on around him but can't due to the fact he thinks too much. I think Holden is unreliable because of the fact that he always talks about things but never does it like when Maurice came into his room and all he did was act defenseless and weak then his mind races and he acts all tough and what he is going to do Maurice. Instead he cowardly walks away and doesn't do anything about it. At most he acts like a dreamer but then realise's reality.
ReplyDeletechapter 14 tried to act tough with the guy from the elevator, and then he's definitely not a tough guy, so he's kind of posing to not have to give them another 5 dollars.
ReplyDeletein chapter 15 Holden is lonely again, because he can't go home yet, so he decides to call Sally and go to that play, and he seems really out of his mind when he jokingly asks Sally to marry him and go away with him. I think he just wants to be with someone, anyone, no matter who it is.
I think that one of Holden's problems is that he just doesn't want to grow up and have responsibilities. The way he is always reminiscing about his past to me makes it look like he's trying to ignore the future. Holden also always runs away when he has responsibilities, like how he moves schools often instead of just doing what he is supposed to.
ReplyDeleteI believe Holden has the problems that many kids have growing up. He seems to want his independence and figure who he is and what he wants. He's talks alot about money with in this section. Also with the nuns he really talks about how they can not go out to a nice lunch because they have no money. But he still seems to really like them. I think that he feels you do not need money to be happy. You only need it survive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chantel with what she said about Holden's view on money. At the end of chapter 15 Holden even says that money always ended up making you sad.
ReplyDeleteHolden is really starting to annoy me. He still hasn't stopped being negative and he is still swearing all the time. Also he rants on about a lot of things that I just don't care about anymore. He seems to be a drifter, drifting aimlessly through life with no sense of guidance just trying to entertain himself day by day. A lot of the things that he discribes are just pointless for example the kid walking on the street. It really bugs me that I don't know why he discribed that whole situation. It seems just so pointless. Another thing that really annoyed me which I'm certain annoyed many of the other readers was when he decided to walk to the museum and describe in his opinion the whole fantastic and wonderful story of the museum and how you're different everytime you go there. There was no point to this, Holden simply walked to the museum for no reason, he even admitted that his sister deffinetly wasn't there, decided to tell us that he wouldn't go into the museum for a million bucks then turned around and left. In conclusion, Holden and his pointless stories are really getting annoying.
ReplyDeleteI one-hundred percent agree with Michael. Holden is getting very annoying with his ranting about things that in the end he doesn't even really care about. Especially when he went to the museum even though he knew his sister wasn't there that day and that he wouldn't go in " for a million bucks". Holden seems to have no purpose in the novel anymore. He doesn't care who he does what with or where he goes. He's simply careless and it's causing the novel to become very uninteresting.
ReplyDeleteI think that in part, he doesn't care what he does or who he does it with, but it's also that he's just so tired of trying to find something to do that he enjoys or feels right about. He's made a mild effort so many times, in so many different locations, with several different people, but no one seems to be making much of an effort to listen to him or put up with him. So as of late, he's just become very careless due to so many failed results. He is losing his motivation.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Holden is really lonely these past chapters, like he made a random date with Sally Hayes. I think he is a little desperate for company because he starts random converstations with people and asks the people the he is not very fond with to go out for drinks or hang out with him.
ReplyDeleteHolden has been really lonely in these chapters. I think he is at a confusing point in life right now, when he went on the date with Sally he wanted to runaway, get a job, and live in Vermont or Massachusetts with her. That was a sign of running away from growing up, because after he mentioned that if they waited a few years everything would be different. He didnt like the thought of if he waited he would be probably working in a office, having to carry suitcases, riding to work in cabs, reading newspapers, pretty much the signs of growing up. If he thinks of something, he wants it done right away, he is very impatient.
ReplyDeleteI have changed my mind about Holden being lonely. I have to say that he is just bored more than anything. But you could easily argue that loneliness leads to boredom or they are practically synonyms. The reason I say this is because whenever he calls up a random friend he hasn’t seen in a while it is just due to the fact he needs to kill some time. The whole reason why he’s hanging out with all of these friends he hasn’t spoken to lately or talking to random people is because he is just burning of time until he can go home. Also, It’s a good thing that Holden has gone to a lot of different schools because now he is able to relate people he meets in his current life to kids he used to room with or go to school with. This is a good thing because then Holden knows how he should talk to that specific person.
