Let's hear all about this wacky narrator/protagonist.

  1. Well in chapter 9 Holden just gets off the train in New York. He doesn't know who to call because he is pretty ashamed and disappointed in himself for being kicked out of school. He thinks of calling Jane Gallagher because they used to have a deep relationship when they lived by each other back in the day. She really understands Holden and his problems and vice versa with Holden. Holden then takes a taxi cab to a hotel called Edmont Hotel, because he has nowhere else to stay. I think he must be very lonely because no one would understand him if he told them he got kicked out of school. When he gets to his room he mentions that he wants to get with a girl. Must be lonely. So Holden calls of a lady, Faith Cavendish. He asks to meet for drinks with her, but the lady refuses. We find out that Holden is very eager to have some company as there's no one else he could call up.

  2. In chapter 10, Holden starts to think about his 10 year old sister Phoebe. He really cares a lot about her because she's so smart and pretty. He really misses his family and we find out that Holden actually is a caring guy under that tough superior. Wants again he thinks about calling up his family, but he wouldn't know what to say to them. So Holden goes downstairs to the Lavender Room to have some drinks and to maybe meet some girls. When he sits down at the bar and tries to order a drink the bartender asks for ID. Of course Holden is underage so he justs orders a coke. He then notices three girls sitting at the table next to him. He describes two of them as very ugly and not appealing. Holden is very judgemental and really doesn't like "not appealing" girls.

  3. I find Holden to be a very odd type of guy. He always seems very antsy to me, almost like he has some type of anxiety problem. A good example of this is when he's talking to the cab driver.
He also always mentions people being corny, and how he doesn't like it, but yet he seems very corny to me. The way he asks the cab driver to have a drink with him makes me think he's being very phony and trying to be sophisticated when really he's not. He knows he can't order alcohol, he's underage, but asks anyway.
He seems to second guess himself also, he doesn't seem like he's really all that rebellious, it's almost like he calculates his actions sometimes.
One thing that really stands out is his sarcasm and how judemental he is of others, but yet won't take a step back and judge himself.

  4. Holden is extremely lonely in this chapter. Holden goes bar hopping alone and tries to meet a lot of new people, but as usual he is unsatasfied with all the "phonies" and just ends up complaining. Even though he feels these people are all phony, he still talks to them because he is lonely and all he wants is some human companionship. The most evident of his lonliness, is when he pays for the prostitute Sunny, but just wants to talk to her and ends up paying for her just to chat.

  5. To Danielle's comment, I agree that he really cares alot about his sister. He compares himself alot to her in these last few chapters, I think his younger siblings sort of inspire him, they seem to be the type of people he wishes to be.
When the girl rejects him he kind of acts defensive.

  6. well this chapter Holden asks the Taxi driver about the Ducks in the lake when it freezes over and he replys what about the fish they can't go anywhere which holden gets bored of the man and then the man gets pretty sore about the question so he ask the man if he wants to get a drink. So he ask's the Man to come in and have a drink but the mane rejects the offer and quickly puts his advice on the lake and bolts off. Later on Holden alone in his room couldn't figure out who to call or what to do so he phones some girl who so he thinks on calling Phoebe but she might be asleep due to its nine o'clock. Then he has the urge to phone Sally Hayes but has Second thoughts due to her mom wasn't very Fond of Holden so he doesn't call. At this point Holden feels pretty down and Lonely in New York. He starts to Gaze out of his window and sees all these couples doing things to each other as in weird things that upset and Confused Holden. Holden shows Sympathy for woman at this point on how someone would do things to a womans face if they liked the woman why would they pour things on her or doing things to her. Holden refers to himself a the Biggest Sex Maniac at this point but he admits to being a virgin. Holden shows large amount of interest in Jane and trys to make up his mind if he should phone her. but of course Backs out of the idea and just stays in his hotel. Later he decides to go and get drink might show that he might be a Alcholic due to him craving an Alcholic Beverage all the time almost. he goes to a club and decides to dance with some woman but instead he gets reject by 2 of the girls but the blonde Girl blew his mind on how she danced. he was really into the Blonde haired girl but he called them Phonies due there ugly hats. He shows that no matter who it is it he always finds something wrong with them or something phony he can't accept the fact there everyone is not perfect and people have there flaws. Holden feels depressed and leaves quite later and because he hated the feeling that he was alone later he just ends up remincsing about Jane and how she put her ings at the back row and everything and how he kissed and necked with her? but other then that he shows great affection feeling for Jane and can easily be seen.

  7. I kinda feel bad for Holden, I mean, he's been kicked out of numerous schools, I don't know how many friends he actually has, and he just seems like he doesn't know what he wants out of his life. I do realize that he's 16, but he acts and sounds like he's much older. Like going to the bar, and asking for drinks, or the way he talks to people, it seems like he's trying to grow up to quickly maybe?

He's always insulting people, calling them phonies, and acting as if he's better than them, as Amir said, he said that the blonde girls were phonies because of their ugly hats, but what about his hunting hat, does that make him a phony if someone else doesn't like it?

  8. I think Holden's very lonely to start with in chapter 9 since his invite with Mrs. Morrow to drinks was denied from chapter 9. He couldn't think of anyone to call from the phone booth at the station who would be up, or who would even want to talk with him at that hour. He had no one to turn too now that he was kicked out of Pencey. Once he was in the cab talking to the driver he asked the driver to go for drinks and yet again got turned down by the offer. I agree with Kirsty that she feels that he's being phony and trying to be sophisticated by asking to go for drinks when he knows he's not of age. Holden got to his room with nothing to do, nothing to look out of but another wall. He went down to the Lavender Room and tried ordering drinks there, but got turned down by that too. Either he's trying to make himself look older and more grown up then he is, or I think he might really like to drink. I know we haven't seen him drinking yet or anything, but he keeps asking to go and have some. He kept giving those older ladies the eye at the table next to him, so maybe he was just trying to make himself look older and impress them or is just looking for an excuse to forget about the fact that he got kicked out of another school that he's going to have to tell his parents about. He tried calling up Faith Cavendish but she denied his attempt in asking her over or going for drinks. She said he sounded pretty young on the phone, yet he said his voice was pretty deep to begin with. I feel like he's being a phony to everyone else and himself. I feel like he's trying to act older then he is when he hasn't even finished school yet. When Mrs. Morrow asked him for his name he gave out the janitors, why should he be embarassed of who he is if he was only making small chit chat in the train. I feel like Holden doesn't really know who he is yet, and where he's going to go and do with himself now that he's out of Pencey. He keeps bringing up Allie so I'm wondering how close of a relationship they had cause his death might have had a huge impact on him and might be the reasons for always getting kicked out and not trying to make an effort in his school work. Yet he seems to want to get a hold of his sister Phoebe to talk to but while doing that, he wants to avoid his parents. He might see himself as a dissapointed to his parents because he's been getting kicked out of schools and since Allie died he might feel like he has a lot to carry on his back to impress his parents.

  9. I chapter 11 Holden starts thinkinhg about Jane Gallagher a lot again. He starts to remember the good old times they had together and how they would play chess, and golf and do other sorts of things. It really drives Holden crazy that Stradlater went on a date with her. He thinks Stradlater is a horrible guy and Jane deserves way better then him. As well Holden thinks back when he showed Allie's baseball glove to Jane. The glove is very important to him and he could trust Jane by telling her all these stories about Allie. Jane really understood Holden and all his problems. Holden misses her and wishes it could be like how it was before. He really wants to talk to her again.

  10. In chapter 12-13, Holden leaves the hotel and goes to a club called "Ernies". He takes a cab and once again strikes up a pointless conversation with the taxi driver. I think Holden keeps on asking about this "pond and if the ducks leave during the winter", because he becomes very antsy (like Kirsty mentioned). He just asks stupid pointless questions that make no sense. Holden starts talking about all the "ugly" people again. It seems to me that he has a huge problem with people's appearances and is really racist towards non appealing people. When Holden goes to the bar he justs has a whole bunch of drinks and leaves. In chapter 13, after he leaves the bar, Holden walks four blocks back to his hotel. Maybe he doesn't want to take a cab because the driver will just shun him out again. When Holden returns to the hotel, an elevator boy asks him whats his age. Holden once again lies and says "twenty-two". The elevator guy asks him if he wants a prostitute to come to his room and Holden of course says yes. He seems to really want to have sex, maybe because he's really lonely and has no one else to talk to or confide in. When the prostitute comes to his room, Holden can't go through with. He makes up a lame accuse that he just had surgery. I think Holden is very ashamed that he has actually gone so far as getting a prostitute to not be lonesome. He tries striking up a conversation with the lady instead. But she gets very irritated with him and leaves. After reading those chapters, I realized that Holden is a very needy person. It seems like he always needs someone with him.

  11. I found Holden a bit pathetic in these chapters. I know that he's lonely, but does he really have to be so desperate that he calls that random girl, hits on older ladies at a bar and agrees to have a prostitute sent to his room, just to talk to her! I think he shouldn't have left Pencey early in the first place. It would be better for him to have some annoying people around for him to talk to, than turning to desperate mesures. At least he could call home already, and let his mom know he got kicked out of school again. He's afraid to, but his mom is going to find out sooner or later, so she might as well find out sooner.

  12. Through these following chapters i think of Holden as some loner. Because he is desperate for company because he has been trying to get with ladies like the girl he randomly called and even the three ladies at the bar that are not even close to his age and he keeps getting turned down. But he still keeps trying to get people to talk to him or make contact like the cab driver that he made pointless conversation with. But Holden should really call his parents and let them know whats happened with him being axed from the school, because the longer he puts it off and not tell them the more trouble he will be in.

  13. Holden seems to put on the bad boy attitude but he seems to be a teddy bear with the ladies. He seems to have a soft side when it comes to the girls, He respects them. It seems like he tries to act like hes all hard and doesn't care when inside he actually does. I might be wrong on this one but it's kinda the drift im getting.
