Catcher has been banned from many schools for its language and content. What's your opinion?

EXTENSION - SESSION 4

Okay, what connections can you make to your own life, to the world, to other literature you have read?

    In chapter 15, Holden goes on and on about suitcases. He can't stand people who hae cheap suitcases, and finds it hard to be roommates with people if your suitcase is better than theirs. That's going a little overboard, but I and I'm sure many others do the same thing often. Holden judges others by their suitcase, and I think I do the same thing sometimes. We judge others without knowing them, just by what they're wearing, the people they hang out with or by other little things like what kind of suitcase they use. It is a pretty stupid thing to do, but we all do it anyways.

    This book occasionally reminds me of the book "The Outsiders" as it is set in generally the same time period. The two books paint a good picture of that time period as they have a complete contrast of characters. There is Holden, the rich kid trying to get through life but has been fairly comfortable. On the other side there is Ponyboy, who is very poor and tries to get through life while taking care of himself and his family while living in a very dangerous area.

    Ponyboy is also in competition with the "Socs", which is the class that Holden basically belongs to I might add.

    I agree with Adam in saying that the book, "The Outsiders" is very similar to that of "Catcher in the Rye". They have that same conflict of the main characters struggling to be accepted and fit in. Not to mention that by having read another book and seen the movie "The Outsiders" I can picture the setting and what clothing was "in", and not to mention the lingo used is very similar. I find it kind of funny how a grand majority of people in the 50's smoked as well and is shown throughout both books.

    I agree with what Kyra said, many people, actually probably everybody judges others on the littlest things. I know that I've personally done the same. And sometimes it was with something like a suitcase, like shoes, that I don't like, or I think are stupid. So if I see someone wearing those shoes, I will automatically have an opinion about the person. Being judged seems to be something that happens to everyone, and is done by everyone.

    Another thing that got me thinking was when Holden was talking about the museum, and saying how he likes that it never changes, but it's the people who go to it that change. I have never really thought about that before, how certain places stay the same, but you're different. Your views may change as you grow up or learn more, or they may stay the same. I just think it's a pretty interesting thought.

    I agree with Kyra on the fact that some places stay the same where its the people or yourself that go there that change. I've thought about this before actually. You may go to your favourite place and somehow not love it as much. I think that happens because as a person you grow and go through different experiences that change your view on things. As well about the fact that being judged and judging others. Holden talks about judging people by their suitcases and the fact that he wouldn't want to room with someone just because they have a cheap suitcase. In many ways though, we judge people on small things as well and depending on what it is, we might not even go to approch them either. I find it pretty sad how we think like that, but I often do the same. It's kind of like a discrimination, and to make ourselves seem better I think we find it easier to judge others.

    I can relate to Holden when he says he was a spendthrift at heart. He says he is a lousy saver and what he doesn't spend, he loses. I myself am not good at saving money. I spend it on stupid things but am getting better at saving as i grow up and learn the value of a dollar.
