Faith the prostitute is the generic women who sleeps around for cash. She didn't seem like much of a talker and just wanted to get "it" over with so she could be on her way,(which was much to the dissapointment of Holden.) At this point in the novel, Holden pretty much hits rock bottom and resorts to hanging out with a prostitute because he has no one else in his life who, he thinks, will listen or is worthy.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I think that someone else should post because it seems like I'm a crazy and talking to myself on a blog.
ReplyDeleteWell throughout chapters 9-13 Holden encounters two taxi cab drivers that are pretty rude, however Holden dismisses that and asks them about where the ducks go when its winter. Both cab drivers have very different opinions; one says he doesnt know and thinks that Holden is crazy and the other one gets very "sore" about it.
ReplyDeleteYes, it seems as if Holden was so lonely that he had to find a prostitute to give him company. I think that Holden has a low self-esteem at times which has him make negative decisions.
ReplyDeleteOn Clarice's post, the two cab drivers are somewhat like Holden's two faced persona; either not caring and un-emotional, or just outright angry.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Justin, people really have to start posting! After Holden gets turned down by faith the prostitute he talks about his sister Pheobe and how he would really want to call her but couldn't risk it in case his parents answered instead of her. He tells us how he really enjoys talking to her and how smart she is. He also brings his sister up while he is dancing with the blonde girl from the bar; Bernice. Holden tells Bernice that she is a really good dancer and she is even maybe as good as his little sister, of course she completely ignores him, almost the entire time they are dancing.
ReplyDeleteRobert Ackley, was the young guy next dorm to Holden. He was peculiar and sometimes obnoxious, he seem to be a loner, but in Holden's eyes, he was likeable. He had no sense of knowing his boundaries. For instance, he was constantly coming into Holden's dorm and uninvited and would overstay his welcome.
ReplyDeleteIn chapeter 11 Holden starts thinking about Jane Gallagher who is his really old friend. He thinks about how she went out with Stradlater, and i think he is kinda jealous because he misses having her around.
ReplyDeleteOne character we have not actually met yet but have heard a lot about is Holdens younger sister Phoebe. Holden seems very fond of her, and always wants to talk to her. By the way Holden takls about Phoebe, it sounds like she's very intelligent, and whenever she would walk behind her brothers, she would just listen to what they had to say, and asked questions when she didn't understand. Another thing Holden tells us about her is that she is apparently "Roller skate skinny"
ReplyDeleteIt is very apparent that Holden had or still does have feelings for the character of Jane Gallagher. He seems so think that she is a good person and likes her for who she is. He does not have any negative comments to say towards her. Which i believe he has a good judge of character, so this implies that Jane is a genuine person. Also he is attracted to her for who she is and not what she looks like. Unlike the prostitute that Holden encounters to where as he is very turned off. Faith the prostitute seems to have lost respect for herself which Holden feels sorry for her and does not find any appeal in her. When he attempts to make conversation with her, she just does not care what he has to say and wants to do her job.
ReplyDeleteI'm just very shocked with Holden. I never thought of him as someone who was so obsessed with sex and what not. I always tagged him as the kind of geeky , "never would get a girl", type guy. But here he is in ch.9 going on and on about it. When he called Faith I was completely blown away. I feel like now as the book moves on Holden is changing more and more from my first impression I had of him.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Holden really seems to admire his brothers and sister. I think it's cute how much he talked about them and how much he brags about them. I get the feeling that he really wishes he could be smart like them and what not. It seems like he must have a lot of pressure on his shoulders seeing as all his other siblings are very intelligent.
ReplyDeleteI think Holden is going to grow up to be an alcoholic. He already is always trying to go for drinks and he went to the bar and was trying to drink there. I bet in the chapters to come it will start getting worse.
ReplyDeleteI agree Kayla, if Holden doesn't find someone to be in a relationship with or atleast a few close friends, he will probably resort to the bars everynight to drink and find "anybody" to talk to.
ReplyDeleteHolden says he hates phonies but during these chapters, I was kind of getting the sense that he himself is a phony. He's trying to be someone he's not. What made me think this about him is the fact that he lies so much. When Holden is in the phone booth and, Faith Cavendish, asks Holden for his name, he wishes he would have given her a phony name. Another occurrence of him being a phony and lying is when he meets the three women at the Lavender Room and he tells them his name is Jim Steele. During these chapters many times he also pretends to be older. He pretend to both cab drivers, Faith and the three women that he was older and he asked all of them to have drink with him, even though he's not even close enough to being of legal age to drink. I'm starting to find Holden to be desperate and pathetic. He's so lonely so he's doing desperate stuff at this point. I find him desperate because, in chapter 9, the only person he can call is a prostitute? If that was the only person I could get ahold of, I wouldn't even bother. I'd rather just not call anyone. The fact that he invites her out for cocktails is where he really seemed desperate. I mean, shes a prostitute... Another part in the book where I found Holden to be desperate was when he went to the Lavender Room and was hitting on thirty year old women. I understand that he's loney and all but he doesn't have bring it to a sexual level just because their women. I just found Holden to be a phony and very desperate in this chapter and I'm starting to not like him as much.
ReplyDeleteWe know that Holden calls up Faith Cavendish. We learn she lived at the Stanford Arms Hotel on Sixty-fifth and Broadway, which was a dump. He knows of her buy a guy who brought her to a Princeton dance, but they nearly got kicked out when he brought her there. She apparently used to be a stripper or something.
