SETTING - SECTION 5

8 comments:

  1. Section 5 starts off with Holden going to a bar called the Wicker Bar, in a fancy hotel. Holden describes it as a swanky bar, pretty busy, with lots of phonies. After the bar, Holden heads out into the cold streets of New York. Holden heads for the park where it is very cold. Holden describes it as the park getting darker and spookier. This shows that Holden is finally starting to feel the effects of a young boy trying to live alone in New York. Holden also goes to his family's apartment. From the description Holden gives, it sounds like it's a very nice, big apartment with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. You can tell it's nice because the elevator boy was worried about letting them up, something they probably only do for the expensive penthouses. You can also tell that they have a very nice apartment because of all the money Holden's family probably has. They can afford to send their kids to private school as well as their dad is going on business to Florida.

  2. In chapter 21, Holden is in his home, & after about an hour of tip-toeing, makes into his sister's room. As he's there, he finally describes his feelings in a positive way. He feels "swell" as he is there, & this is one of the first times we find him in a setting where he is actually comfortable let alone happy. Obviously he really just needed some place a little more at home. Like, home itself. Probably because he knows it's true, & not a "phony" place filled with "phony" people.

  3. In these chapters Holden appears to be very depressed. To add to the setting Holden is seen wondering around drunk. Being drunk completely eliminates him from communicating with the sober part of society. When he is drunk people try not to strike conversations with him, which adds to the setting in the chapter 20. Since he cannot connect to people it symbolizes how he feels. I think that when Holden is drunk resemble of how he feels like he is cut off from the world.

  4. I agree with what Jon is saying about Holden and his drunkness. I also think that with Holden being at his house, seeing his sister again and being in a different state of mind, instead of his drunk, negative selish self, makes him see just how lucky he is with what he has. When Holden was in the bar, drunk out of his face, his exceptations of himself were not so great, but back at home, thinking about his sister and Allie, I think reminded him of how lucky he does have it, even though the only thing he really liked was Allie, even though he was dead. The connection that Holden has with Phoebe is what is keeping him around. When he got kicked out of school he could have left and gone somewhere else, but he decides to go home, he didn't want to disapoint Phoebe. This shows that Holden has a great deal of respect for his family and what they think, even if it is negative.

  5. This section all takes place in one night in three different locations. The locations being the Wicker Bar, Centeral Park, and Holden's own home. First off Holden meets up with Luce who can't stay long. Maybe he actually couldn't stay long or perhaps Luce was aware of the uncomfortable conversation topics Holden liked to bring up and knew that he wouldn't be able to handle staying long. Anyways Holden get very, very drunk and goes to the park because he wants to see the duck situation. At this time it is very dark and he is very drunk and his mind starts to wander and he wonders about if he had pneumonia, how that would effect his little sister. He then decides to go home finally to see his sister, where we meet her for the first time. It would give the impression that his house is very neat and tidy and also probably a good size with lots of bedrooms. There is even mention of a maid which would lead you to believe that his family is wealthy. His parents are out at a party and they won't be home until very late so I assume it isn't as late as I first imagined it to be because really, how late were parents staying out to party back in the fifties? Thats just my opinion.

  7. Holden himself goes to the bar to meet up with an old friend that he thinks is another fake, not surprising. Holden keeps asking him questions that he thinks he would answer, but the boy doesnt, he feels they are to innapropriate and leaves Holden. So now Holden being the protagonist that seems to be "acting" very mature and everyone around him is a phony, has been brought out as immature. Now very drunk he leaves and goes to his home, to see his sister. His home has been described as a very posh place, that not many people are allowed in.His sister wakes up in her brother D.B's big bed, over joyed to see her brother. Everything is normal between the two of them even though she knows he was kicked out.

  8. Throughout this section there are three places that the setting takes place one being a bar that is located inside of the seaton hotel. I agree with mike that he got total drunk at the bar and that is why i think he went to the park so late at night because people like to do some pretty odd things when they get drunk. As well he went back to his house to see his sister and i think he did this because some people get quite emotional when they drink and they begin to think about a lot of things that they care about. But just tend to hide it in the back of there minds and just try and for get about it.
