POINT OF VIEW & LANGUAGE USE - SECTION 6

6 comments:

  1. Well in chapter 23-26 Holden is really depressed for the most part and hurt. Holden goes to Mr. Antolini's house, to stay overnight because he has nowhere else to go and really trusts him. When Holden arrives at Mr. Antolinis apartment, Holden is really happy and he tells Antolini about Pencey and how he flunked every subject, except english. Mr. Antolini gives Holden some good advice and tells him to work hard in school. Holden seems very comfortable at this time, but it all changes when Holden goes to sleep. When he wakes up, he feels Mr. Antolini's hand rubbing on his head. Holden gets freaked out. "He was sitting on the floor right next to the couch and was petting me or patting me on the goddam head."(pg 192). From this quote you can tell that Holden is totally shocked and freakd out. He trusted this man and now doesn't know what to think. Holden quickly leaves Antolini's apartment, sweating like crazy. "I was sweating. When something perverty like that happens, I start sweating like a bastard. " He's really scared and doesn't know why that just happened.

  2. In chapter 25, Holden takes a bus to Grand Central, and sleeps in a waiting room where all the benches are. He says "I think I was more depressed than I ever was in my whole life."(pg 125). Holden is really hurt by what just happened, and he can't go to anyone for support, because he has basically shunned everyone out. Holden starts getting crazy ideas, that he is going to leave the city and head west. He dreams that he will work at a gas station and meet a girl and get married right away. This prooves how Holden is going crazy, and not facing his problems, but instead thinking of ridiculous ideas to run away from everything in his life.

  3. Holden throughout the book has been very repetative. He repeats things like "I really do mean it" which makes me think that he's trying to convince himself that he does believe something but truly doesn't. It makes me think that he's a liar and that he's trying to cover up something that really isn't there.
He speaks as if he's having a conversation with you, like your his friend but is still very guarded about his emotions.
I think at this point Holden is very paranoid about everything and because of that paranoia doesn't really trust anyone. I'm confused about Mr.Antolini's actions to Holden in chapter 24, and im not sure if it was a molestation type of thing or if Holden was just so paranoid that he blew it out of proportion.

  4. He use his language more carefully when he was around Phoebe. Shows that he is protecting his sister. Holden is able to being himself infront of Phoebe, dancing with her and even crying infront of when Phoebe gives him some money to use. I also agree with Danielle-Ewacha. Holden doesn't know how to solve all the problems around him, and he just decided to not face them instead he started to day dream.

  5. I believe Holden's crazy ideas were normal for a person of his age. It may seem insane, but in junior high everyone has crazy ideas about their future. Reader's believe Holden's childish ideas are insane, but I feel that we are forgetting that he is still only a junior in high school living the life of an adult.

  6. I agree with Daniel here that it is not uncommon for a teen his age to have these thoughts of their future. In Holdens case it wasn't just his ideas though it was the way he carried out his ideas with his actions. I still have thoughts about my future life but i don't leave my house going from having opportunities to struggling to make it on my own. Especially that he dropped out of school and lost his chance for that educational background. My final opinion, is that Holden has a good mind but just needs a little more good influence in his life. In these last couple chapters Holden expresses fully that he has reached his breaking point of being lonely and independent.
