HOLDEN CAULFIED - SECTION 5

9 comments:

  1. Holden Caulfield is a confused teenager who seems as if he is lost. He doesn't know where he fits in. All he wants to do is get away from all the phony people. Holden even asks Sally to leave New York with him and to start a life of their own. It's also quite clear that Holden's very lonely.

  2. I feel that Holden is very lonely, maybe even depressed. He seems to think a lot about his family, mostly his brother Allie and his sister Phoebe. And whenever they are mentioned, there is always something good said about them. I think that Holden misses being with his family, but he also thinks that being independent and on his own will make his life better. I really hope that in the end Holden will find out what he needs to do to make himself happy with his life.

  3. During chapter 22 we see that with the help of his sister, Phoebe, Holden finally realizes that he is very negative about everything, and does not particularly like anything. I think this is a turning point in the book for Holden and he will probably change as a person because of this, probably for the better. He may come to be more of a positive person because of this experience and realization.

  4. I really think Holden matures in this chapter. Being with his sister again, and having her tell him about how he hates everything and needs to get his act together really shows that he does care about people, especially his sister. Holden is really nice to his sister, and although he says he's going to move to Colorado, you can tell he won't, because he will miss his family too much, especially his sister.

  5. I've noticed that Holden is very much like his sister in this section of the book. Like her, he changes his name a lot. When he opens one of her school books, he finds that she's written a different name in place of "Josephine", which she apparently does quite often. He thinks somewhat harshly of it, yet he changes his name fully all the time. Also, she tends to rant on about one thing while he's trying to talk to her about something else. & Everytime someone tries to change topics with Holden, he's reluctant at the least. I think this is either because he's truly just very childish still, very similar to her because they are family, or a bit of both.

  6. I think Holden is a very interesting character, he really has no idea what to do in life, he had one idea to leave New York and just start a new life, it would not be as easy as he thinks though. Holden gets kicked out of every school that he goes to. He can't find anywhere that he actually wants to put in effort to stay. He loves his sister Phoebe as you can tell in chapter 22 when he finally gets home and wakes her up to talk to her.

  7. I agree with Adam, in saying that in chapter 22 was a turning point for Holden when someone he actually cares about tells him that what he has been doing is plain idiotic. I hope this is the wake up call that Holden needs as I am beginning to feel a bit attached to him.

  8. Holden is still very lonely, and is really missing his family and the way life used to be. I agree with Jasmine, this is definatly a turning point for Holden. When he finds out that someone actually cares about him, and tells him that he is going no where in life, he actually listens. I think if Holden was closer with his family, or if Allie was still alive, he would be alot happier, and hating on everything. When he saw Phoebe he was alot happier then he has been lately, and I think he needs someone like her in his life more often.

  9. In these chapters Holden continues his downward spiral towards going no where in life. He continues to think about events of the past but none of them seem to be happy memories. Like when he talks to his sister phobe, she even points out to Holden that he hates everything. Holden is getting worse and does not realize it. He travels home knowing that he has next to no money and all he does their instead of getting help or staying, is talk to his sister and even gets told that hes screwing up basically and takes his youngers sisters money. This is just eveidene that Holden isn't as independent as he thinks.
