In chapter 19 we meet Carl Luce. I find him to be very rude actually. Holden describes him as a guy who knew a lot about sex and how to know if someone was a flit or lesbian. In my opinion he seems like the type of person who just makes up things he doesn't really know just to show off how "cool" he is. When Carl meets Holden at the bar he is very stand-offish he doens't want to stay long and everytime Holden tries striking up a conversation with him he shuts him down. Although the conversation Holden was trying to strike up was a little strange it was questions about things he thought that Carl could answer. Carl Luce also stated that he was going out with a woman that was in her thirities which weirded me out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Carl Luce sounds a bit like he makes things up, since he doesn't want to talk about anything. But at the same time if I were Carl I would probably start getting annoyed with Holden too. He makes it pretty clear that he doesn't want to talk about anything personal but Holden keeps pushing him, he asks and says kind of immature things. Though Carl seems annoyed with Holden throughout the conversation at the beginning he seemed to be stuck up and a little snooty. You can kind of tell by the way he talks down to Holden, he's not very nice.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kristy, Holden does start saying immature things and he definitely does keep pushing him. Although I dont understand why Carl would even meet Holden if he was just gonna sit there, have a few drinks, and than leave. Carl didnt even seem like he wanted to talk to Holden. It seemed more like Carl wanted to feel superior to someone. I also agree with Jasmine about how its kinda creepy that the women that Carl was seeing was in her thirties.
ReplyDeleteMost of the characters that Holden meets are a bit strange. He seems to look up to the Carl Luce character and ask advice from him. Carl seems as if he is kind of annoyed by Holden at times since Holden asks him alot of questions.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 19 Holden meets up with a old friend from Whooton named Carl Luce. Holden met Luce at the Wicker bar where they tried to start a converstaion but Luce was very closed minded towards the questions that Holden was asking him. I think if i was in Luces situation i would of been very annoyed at Holden for not understanding that i didn't want to talk about my personal stuff with him, but i would also try to strike up a conversation to change the subject maybe? Anyways i think that Holden is very rude to people who don't want to do what he wants and thats probably why he is lonely and depressed, he never really gives anyone a chance.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite character in this section is Phoebe Caulfield. She seems to be a really nice, funny, and regular young girl. I think it's nice the relationship that Phoebe and Holden have, you can tell that they really care about each other and also have a lot of fun when they're together.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your comments of Carl Luce. He seems like an over confident jerk, who is completey self absorbed. It makes me angry to see Holden treating him as if he was some god. He avoided most of Holden's questions because he honestly did not know the answer himself. He just tries to keep his dignity by acting ignorant.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cam. I liked Phoebe a lot. She was really cute and was so excited to see Holden, and wanted to tell him everything. They really care about each other because Phoebe gets really worked up when she figures out that Holden got kicked out of school again. She's worried that their dad is going to kill Holden, and she gets really upset. She's a very smart girl, and I like that she pushes Holden to find out if there's actually anything he likes in the world.
ReplyDeleteIn chapters 21 and 22 we get to meet Phoebe, the sister that Holden has mentioned several times in the novel. When we meet Phoebe we realize that she is an ordinary child who acts in childish ways. This is the reason why Holden likes her so much; she is young and innocent. She has not been corrupted by the world and has a mind that that is very straight forward. She sees things as they appear. Although Phoebe is very young she also shows much intelligence. She becomes aware that Holden got kicked out of Pency and knows enough to tell Holden that his dads going to kill him. The reason why I think Holden likes her so much is not only because of her innocence, but also that she will listen to him when he explains to her how he feels.
ReplyDeleteThe most significant part about this section of reading in my opinion, the moment we've all been waiting for, we get to meet Holden's sister, Phoebe. Before getting to this part I was wondering if she was actually who Holden said she was or if he was just lying to himself maybe, but she is deffinetly as discribed by him previously. She seems very smart and very sophisticated for a kid. She seems to love Holden a lot. I think Holden really enjoys her company over anyone else's because she seems to understand him better than any other character we've met or have heard of. It doesn't sound like Holden's father will be so accepting when he hears Holden got booted out of school again.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Carl Luce that much. He seems like the kind of person who thinks of himself as superior to everyboby else and looks down on everyone. Also the way he kept talking down to Holden and calling him immature made him look like he considered himself above talking to someone like Holden.

ReplyDeleteMy Favorite character of this section Would have to be Carl Luce. I feel this way because i feel that he has strong personality about himself and i feel that is an about trait to have in life. I don't agree with jake that Carl luce feels that he is superior or that he thinks to highly of himself compared to others. I think that he just has strong convince in himself and i think that if you want to accomplsih things in life you have to feel that you can do it and that you can do it better then someone else can.
ReplyDeleteIn this section we meet a new character that Holden met at Whooton, his name is Carl Luce. In a way he reminds me alot of Holden. If he doesnt want to talk about something, he wont, he will change the subject, and thats what Carl was doing the whole time that they were talking.
ReplyDeleteWe also meet Holdens sister Phoebe, who is a funny, nice and caring girl. She acts a bit childish at times, and I think thats why Holden really likes her, she is alot like him. You can tell that Holden and Phoebe have a very good relationship together, but I kinda wonder if they would have the same relationship if Allie was still alive.
when Holden met Carl Luce, i thought he was a very interesting character. He seemed like he knew a lot only on hooking up with girls and sex and sharing his knowledge with other boys then actually listening to Holden and his questions and problems.
ReplyDeleteAlso there is Phoebe, Holdens sister. She seems like such a sweetie pie, and she seems very intelligent for her age. I like how her and Holden get together, i wish me and my siblings had a decent relationship like them.
The character that i am very fond of in this section is Carl Luce because he seems like he has a good head on his shoulders and he is not immature like Holden. Carl Luce seems to be a very grown up guy who doesn't like talking about his personal life and he is very knowledgeable when it comes to the ladies that is why Holden goes to him for advice.
