In terms of plot in the first three chapters, we do not see much developing. There is some minor conflict between Caulfield and his history teacher, Mr. Spencer near the beginning of the book over Caulfield's apparent lack of motivation and enthusiasm for his academic career. We also see some minor conflict when Caulfield returns to his room and is encountered by the tennant of the next room over, Ackley, who seems to annoy Caulfield with every one of his actions. As chapter three ends we know that Caulfield is packing up his belongings and is returning to his home in New York soon.
ReplyDeleteWithin the first three chapters the plot develops with the addition of new characters. These characters including Spencer, Caulfield's history teacher. Ackley is also a newly presented character, that has bad teeth, and a bad personality to match. His bad personality is presented in many ways, such as his disregard for other people's belongings. We also meet Stradlater, Caulfield's roommate that Ackley does not like, though Caulfield discribes him as a nice guy. No strong tensions have yet been presented within these 3 chapters.
ReplyDeleteCaulfield does infact though, compliment other male characters, such as calling them "gorgeous" (page 30) and describing their physical features.
ReplyDeleteThe first 3 chapters of the story explain how Caulfield gets flunked from one of his classes and goes to visit his history teacher, Spencer. Not much is explained about the plot so far, except that Caulfield is going to be leaving Pencey.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning chapters we are introduced to some of Caulfield's friends. They are Ackley and Stradlater. He has an interesting friendship with them and usually likes to horse around with them.
ReplyDeleteWe also find out that before Caulfield leaves he wants to feel some sort of "good bye" (page 4) so he will know he's leaving it. That way he won't feel even worse than he does about leaving.
ReplyDeleteI thought the plot in chapter four was interesting. Holden and Stradlater had some bonding time "in the can." This consists of shaving, tap dancing and wrestling. Holden finds out the girl that Stradlater is going on a date with is his old neighbor, Jane Gallagher. He's very interested in her, and he has lot's of memories of her. I'm interested to find out more about her, and why Holden can't stop thinking about her until Ackley comes in popping his pimples.
ReplyDeleteWell from 1-3 Chapters it tells us that Caulfield is a disregarding brat who none the less judge other people on how they act and respond to things then judging himself. He visits his old teacher, Mr. Spencer and points out his physical feature and his attitude towards him being kicked out of Pencey also he keeps going on by saying how his school is phony and how everything that everyone does is phony. Nonetheless it shows no tension in these 3 chapters. Caulfield shows some interest on how men look well physical at least.
ReplyDeleteIn the first three chapters we learn about characters such as Caulfield, Mr.Spencer (Caulfields old history teacher), and Caulfied's two friends, Ackley and Stradlater. The plot is pretty much based on Caulfield flunking 4 out of 5 of his classes, getting kickout out of Pencey, and going to see his old history teacher Mr. Spencer for a finale goodbye. At first Caulfied was happy about going to see Mr.Spencer until he started lecturing him about his academics and where he wants to go in life.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter one, we are introduced to the main character Holden Caulfield. We learn that Caulfield has been kicked out of Pencey, as well we learn a minor detail that he was the Fencing team's manager, and was in New York earlier that morning, but forgot the equipment on the Subway, so they had to forfeit. Aswell, we learn that he has a brother, named 'D.B' who writes in Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter two, we meet Mr Spencer, Caulfield's old history teacher. They chat about a few things, but Caulfield decides to make up an excuse as to why he has to leave when Mr Spencer starts nagging on him about his future. He then leaves the Spencer home.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter three, we are in the dorms, which are called the Ossenburger Memorial Wing and are only for juniors and seniors. We are then introduced to Robert Ackley, a senior, from the next door dorm, who shares a shower with Caulfield's dorm room. We learn that Caulfield likes to horse around when he gets bored, and to annoy other people. We also find out that Ackley doesn't much like Caulfield's room-mate, Stradlater, who comes into the story nearing the end of the chapter. Stradlater is also a senior.
