I thought the plot in chapter four was interesting. Holden and Stradlater had some bonding time "in the can." This consists of shaving, tap dancing and wrestling. I don't really know the significance of tap dancing, maybe Holden's a weird guy with a different sense of humour. Holden finds out the girl that Stradlater is going on a date with is his old neighbor, Jane Gallagher. He's very interested in her, and he has lot's of memories of her. I'm interested to find out more about her, and why Holden can't stop thinking about her until Ackley comes in popping his pimples.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter five, Holden and his friend Mal Brossard decide they want to go to the movies. I thought it was nice that Holden invited Ackley to go with them since he knows Ackley doesn't usually go out on Saturday nights. He was nice enough to invite him, even if he gets on their nerves. I think this shows that Holden does care about others and tries to include them.
ReplyDeleteIn chapter 7, after the fight between Holden and Stradlater, Holden goes to Ackley's room to annoy him. Holden decides he wants to leave Pencey that night, and stay at a cheap hotel in New York until he goes home. He cries a little while leaving, which shows he is upset to be leaving yet another school. But then he yells down the hall "sleep tight, ya morons" so i think this tells us that Holden does have a sensitive side, but he puts on a tough act to cover it up.
ReplyDeleteIn these four chapters, the biggest plot that I have noticed is Holdens sudden obsession with the girl that Stradlater is starting to date named Jane. Holden remembers Jane from when he was younger and asks Stradlater to ask her some questions about chess and what not. Even though Holden knows that Stradlater won't ask her, he seems to ask him to do so anyway, which shows that he really wishes that Stradlater would mention it. Holden starts to get a little annoyed at Stradlater when he does an essay for him, and Stradlater complains that it's about a baseball glove. Holden continues to get more angry when Stradlater can't even remember if the girls name he's dating is Jane or Jean. This starts the huge fight in chapter 6.
ReplyDeleteI agree Shanell, I believe Holden's sudden obsession over this girl is the most important part of this section. It adds to the few things we know about Holden's personality at the moment. Holden's obsession and curiosity is actually the cause of the "fight" in chapter 6 between Stradlater and himself.
ReplyDeleteHolden stays in Ackley's room for some time of which he would not mention the reason of why the fight broke out. I feel this proves Holden had feelings for Jane in the past, and he did not want to tell Ackley in case of it getting back to Stradlater. Holden packs and leaves Pency after this.
In chapter five we got to see another side of Holden, a side of caring, he invites Ackley to go to the movie with him and Mal. I thought that showed a sympathetic side of Holden, because he knew Ackley never goes out. In this chapter Holden also mentioned his younger brother with bright red hair, who died of leukemia when Holden was only 13. I feel that Holden's badboy cover up comes from his brothers death, he tries to hide his emotions by acting tough.
ReplyDeleteChapter six is where Stradlater comes back from his date with Jane. Holden gives Stradlater the composition Stradlater basically makes him write. Stradlater's first words about the composition was, "For Chrissake, Holden. This is about a goddamn baseball glove," the composition was suppose to be about a room. I think Stradlater should of been thankful that he did the assignment for him, even though it wasn't correct. Holden and Ackley get into an arguement, which ends with Holden with a bloody nose on the floor.
In chapter seven Holden tries to sleep in Ackley's roomates bed, while talking to Ackley about his frustration with Stradlater and the whole Jane situation. Holden then decides to leave to New York tonight instead of later on in the week.
In Chapter eight Holden is on the train to New York and meets an older good looking lady, who Holden is very attracted to. She asks if he goes to Pencey (because he had a sticker on his bag). He says yes, and they get into a conversation about her son, Ernest, because he goes there also. Holden make's a bunch of lies about Ernest to his mother saying that he is a very sensitive boy, and a very popular one also. He told her his name was Rudolf, who is the Janitor at Pency. Also he tells her he is on his way to New York to get his brain tumor removed. Which is very untrue.
In these four chapters, Holden finds out that his dorm mate Ackley is taking his old neighbor and childhood girlfriend, whom he still has feelings for, jane gallagher, out on a date. Holden knows that Ackley is not in it for the relationship but for other things that holden does not appreciate or approve of. Holden gets furious when Stradler gets back from his "date" and ends up getting into a fist fight with him. After this holden leaves pency and goes to stay in a hotel in Manhattan and not tell his family he is there and back home.
ReplyDeleteOn the way to Penn Station in New York Holden meets a mother of one of the student's at Pencey who he does not like. He tells the mother lies about her child saying how "good" of a person and how "well respected" her son is. When Holden gets to his destination he wants to call lots of people but decides not to and decides to go to the Edmont Hotel. While at the hotel he witnesses a man putting on high heels, a bra, corset, silk stockings and an evening gown. Holden then calls a woman who hes never met before named Faith Cavendish. He belives she used to be a stripper and he is hopping she will sleep with him.
