It seems as if Holden doesn't like anyone or anything, everything annoys him. He seems very troubled. For example he is fine with the fact that he has gotten kicked out of school, again. The way he talks and and swears its as though maybe he doesn't like the way he is but he would rather stay that way then to change his way of life and the way he percieves things.
ReplyDeleteHey Michael, or anyone else out there, what do you think about the difference in the way Holden narrates the story and the way he speaks to Mr. Spencer? What might this tell us about his character?
ReplyDeleteTo me, Holden seems like he cares about things, but he is just very critical of people, and seems almost mad at everything around him. He shows a lot of anger towards different people, such as Stradlater and Ackery, and even though he likes Stradlater he still bugs him. Ms. Beebe, in regard to how Holden speaks to Mr. Spencer and how he narrates just shows how he is insecure, and he trys to talk all tough, but really he's a nice enough guy. Also I think Holden is very smart, only his problems are he doesn't want to apply himself to school, sports or having lots of friends, he seems happpy in his own little world where he critisizes people and seems happy about getting kicked out of school.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Beebe, I feel that by looking at how respectful Holden is when conversing with Mr. Spencer is an example of his intelligence. Based on his narration, he seems very unintelligent, however this side of Holden shows that he is lacking determination to be respectful. He doesn't apply himself because he doesn't see the benefit of speaking properly in the narration.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daniel, I think Holden is very intelligent, despite not showing it through the language in his narration. I think he could do really well in school, as shown in his english mark, the problem is he is not interested in school or school life, and therefore resents being there which is why he is rude to people.
ReplyDeleteI think the way Holden was speaking to Mr. Spencer was a sign of his respect he has for him. He holds Mr. Spencer in high regard. The way he narrates compared to the way he spoke to Mr. Spencer proves that he is dealing with personal issues. He just can't help but be annoyed by things. I predict that perhaps Holden will be a dynamic character and over time change the way he narrates. It's a possibility that he will stop swearing all the time and stop being so critical towards himself and other people.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mike about Holden changing over time, I think that he is a very strong-willed character and will continue to do things his own way the rest of the book. He will probably remain critical about people, but he will learn to deal with it and accept people for their mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI just think that sooner or later Holden is going to have to change his ways in order to succeed. He is going to have to "grow up" if you will and gain some maturity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mike. I think that Holden will change the way he narrates towards the end of the novel. He showed real potential when he was talking with Mr.Spencer. He is capable of holding back from his usual foul language and with Salinger adding his attitude to such a significant level in the novel i think that his purpose is to change for the better and mature throughout the story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sam and Mike. I think Holden is starting out as a tough guy, by not caring about school, getting kicked out and using foul language, but by the end of the book I think Mr.Spencer or some other character that we have not yet be introduced to will change the way Holden thinks, and the way he acts. I think the books going to be about Holden becoming a better person and being sucessful.
ReplyDeleteI find that Holden also seems to act totally immature, trying to portrey something he is not. Holden seems to be very attentive to detail and noticing little things that wouldn't normally catch everyones eye.

ReplyDeleteHolden Caulfield i think is a very troubled guy because he doesn't care about getting kicked out of school he lies to everybody. He always seems to be an angry guy that complains about a lot of things.
