I think that Holden is a confused but sincere character. Throughout the first eight chapters he has done sincere things which have not stood out. He has frequently lent things to various characters in the book. The reason why I think that Holden is confused is because he is always mad and sees so many defects in himself and often rants about other people who have traits he doesn’t. I think the source of Holden’s anger comes a lot from his past. I think that he carries a lot of anger from his younger brother’s death, who seems to have been a good friend of his.
ReplyDeleteI think that Holden is an awesome guy. He a boy of any words. He is blunt and honest when he talks about people. Also he is pretty hilarious. But i also do believe that he has many issues with growing up and commitment.
ReplyDeleteHolden seems to, in a way, want to keep some sort of reputation to the readers as a sort of "tough guy" almost. He constantly makes fun of and complains about everyone around him, almost like he's trying to make himself seem better. He also never shows his emotions in anything. Like when he talks about his brothers death in chapter 5, he tells the story of what happened, and when he finally starts getting into how he feels about it, when he's in the garage breaking the windows, he sort of goes off track then goes "Anyway," and just drops the whole subject.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with Chantal; I don't believe Holden has any issues what-so-ever with commitment. He is fully committed to himself, but himself only. His choice of what to commt TO may be flawed, but I think that's just his decision.
ReplyDeleteHolden is most definitely a blunt, take it or leave it kind of guy. He isn't realy afraid to speak his mind, like when he and Stradlater were arguing (and eventually fighting.) Holden wanted things done his way or the highway, and that just ended up with him gasping for air on the floor. Sure the guy can be a complete ignoramous but he's definitely not afraid of anyone or the consequences of his actions, whether they be good or bad.
ReplyDeleteHolden is very annoying what I have been reading up on him he can be Hilarious but he acts like child and doesn't know what to stop asking about things or saying things such as when he is talking to stradlater calling him and Moron over and over agian as though he has very childish way of dealing with things. He somewhat he shows attempts to show how tough guy he is it can't be seen. He wonders to himself about things and puts himself down. Then he would get so depressed that he would run away from his problems without facing them well atleast attempt to face them. He is a stubborn little boy with problems of accepting the way things are.
ReplyDeleteSince we didn't know much about Holden at the begining of the book, I found him to be very critical, without a reason behind it, and i found him very funny. Now as the book continues we're finding out more about him and I agree with Shanell because, it's more seeming like he puts other people down to make himself feel better because he's just angry inside. I think by Holden always putting other people down and always going on rants, gives him a sence of escape from his anger because it takes his mind off reality and he can have that brief moment of being happy. I'd also have to agree with Jon that Holden's brother's death is the main cause of Holden's anger. I feel as if, if Allie were still alive Holden would be a different person. For example, he wouldn't be failing four of his classes or get kicked out of school, he'd be living an all around better life. His brother's death had a big impact on Holden's life. Over all though, I find Holden's character to be very interesting and I like reading his thoughts and what he has to say.
ReplyDeleteTo me Holden had way too many things going on in his mind. He would be talking about one situation and then from that come out with something related and then go back to the original situation. He does'nt seem really want to have a real relationship with his peers. His comfort zone is with his younger sister Phoebe. I feel he doen't want anyone get to know him or let anyone into his heart, because he does'nt trust anyone of them.I agree with Jon and Sarah-Lynn, his brother's death seems to have had a big impact on Holden. His writing is very detailed, you can truly feel his thoughts by the way he writes.
ReplyDeleteI think Holden is very blunt and doesn't care what people think of him. He tells people how it is and thats it. For example when Stradlater asked Holden to write his composition for him; Holden doesn't say he will until the very end because he doesnt even know if he feels like writing it. I think it takes a very strong person to say what their actually thinking.
ReplyDeleteHolden not only says what is on his mind but also has alot of courage in a way. Holden is the type of guy to just start talking to anyone, it doesnt matter what they look like or how they act. He could find them the most annoying person in the worrld but for some odd reason he still tries to see if there is something more there. When he meets Mrs. Morrow he tells her exactly what she wants to hear about her son; Ernie even though it is not exactly the truth. Holden has very strong opinions on people and I think that he is a very strong person.
ReplyDeleteI think Holden is a shy guy, but doesn't act like he cares what other people think of him, but deep down i think he does care. He is a little rebellious.
